Roberts leads Panthers to Little East victories
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Plymouth State University senior pitcher Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) picked up a win and a save Saturday afternoon as the Panthers swept Rhode Island College, 6-5 and 3-0, in Little East Conference softball action at the Bazar Softball Complex.
Senior Julia Royer (Pawcatuck, Conn.) led the way for the Panthers offensively, going 4-for-8 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass,) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a double.
In game one, Plymouth State (11-21, 3-7 LEC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.). The hosts (12-16, 3-7 LEC) bounced back with two runs in the home half of the frame as sophomore Jackie Gauthier (Seekonk, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, R.I.) contributed an RBI single.
PSU evened the game in the third when junior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) scored on an error. RIC went on top, 3-2, in the fourth as Gauthier doubled and was brought home by another DiScuillo RBI single.
The Panthers score twice in the fifth, paced by a two-run double by freshman Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.), to jump back on top, 4-3. PSU added two more in the sixth as Kennard and Royer registered an RBI single and double, respectively.
RIC trimmed its deficit down to a pair of runs, 6-4, when freshman Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, R.I.) picked up an RBI single in the sixth. PSU left runners on second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but were unable to get another insurance run across.
Hall went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of doubles for the visitors. DiScuillo went 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a double.
Sophomore pitcher Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) earned the win (2-3) with six innings of work, and Roberts earned her second save.
Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap in the top of third when Kennard doubled and was later brought home on sophomore Abrie Davis' (Amherst, N.H.) RBI single. The Panthers scored two in the top of the sixth on a Royer two-run double to left field. That would be all Roberts would need as she allowed just five hits and struck out four in a complete game win (4-8).
Kennard went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Royer went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
PSU is right back in action on Sunday, hosting New England College in a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The team will celebrate Senior Day at D&M Park.
