PSU Softball downs Keene State in Little East Tournament opener

Miller tosses four-hit shutout to lead Panthers to victory

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) pitched a four-hit shutout Tuesday afternoon as top-seeded Plymouth State University blanked sixth-seeded Keene State College, 2-0, in the opening game of the Little East Conference Tournament at PSU's D&M Park.

Miller scattered four hits without walking a batter while striking out five to improve her season record to 10-5. Sophomore Molly St. Germain (Dover, N.H.) had a solid performance in the circle for Keene State, allowing just two runs on five hits but was a tough-luck loser (13-9).

Sophomore Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) led the Panther offense with two hits, including a double. Seniors Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H.) and Emma Rhodes (Rochester, N.H.) each drove in a run in the victory.

Both teams advance in the double-elimination tournament, hosted by Plymouth State. Keene State (16-19 overall) will play next at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday against Game 2 (UMass Dartmouth/Eastern Connecticut) loser, while Plymouth State (21-15-1) will play at noon against the Game 3 (UMass Boston/Western Connecticut) loser.

NCAA Division III College Softball – Little East Conference Tournament Game 1

at D&M Park, Plymouth, N.H. – Tuesday, May 2, 2017

#1 Plymouth State 2, #6 Keene State 0

Records: Plymouth State 21-15-1; Keene State 16-19

* Plymouth State posted its first LEC Tournament victory since 2014. The Panthers were 0-2 in 2015 and missed last year's post-season.

* PSU took a lead with a run in the third inning. Junior Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.) led off with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Morrill singled to advance Murray to third, then stole second, and senior Katie Kennard (Concord, N.H.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Keene State mishandled a two-out grounder by Rhodes, allowing Murray to score.

* The Panthers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning after Morrill doubled to right center and Kennard singled to put runners at the corners, and Morrissey's sacrifice bunt plated Morrill.

* Miller handled the rest for PSU to post her second shutout. Keene State singled in each of the first three innings as well as the sixth, but none of the runners reached second base. She closed out the win in the seventh inning with two groundouts and a pop-up. Miller avenged a 4-3 loss to Keene State last Thursday.
