PSU Softball rallies past Fredonia State

Davis drives in winning run as Panthers score twice in final at-bat

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.) cracked an RBI single to centerfield in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Plymouth State University softball team to a dramatic, 4-3, come-from-behind win over Fredonia State in a non-conference game at Legends Way on Monday afternoon.

PSU entered the top of the seventh trailing 3-2, but for the third time this season earned a win in its final at bat. Senior Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.) got the rally started with a one-out triple down the leftfield line. Junior Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice to score Murray and tie the game at three-apiece. Junior Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) followed with a clean single to right to move Emerson to second. After a lineout to left, both runners advanced on a passed ball and Davis came through with the clutch hit to drive in the winning run.

Sophomore Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) worked a one-two-three bottom half of the inning to pick up her first save of the year and secure the win for the Panthers, just hours after throwing a complete game, one-hit shutout. Senior Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) picked up the win to improve to 2-1 after allowing just a single in her one inning of work. Junior Hannah Seidner (Pembroke, N.H.) went the first five innings for PSU, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two.

Fredonia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.) drove in freshman Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y.) from third with a fielder's choice.

Plymouth evened the score in the next half inning. Sophomore Jen Landers (Berlin, N.H.) opened the inning with a single to center, then moved to third after a fielding error by the centerfielder. Senior Taylor Wood (Londonderry, N.H.) worked a walk and after a strikeout, sophomore Haley Birch (Salem, Conn.) smacked a single through the left side to score Landers.

The Panthers pulled in front in the top of the fourth. Junior Mel Goss (Templeton, Mass.) opened the inning with a base hit, then Birch reached safely when the Blue Devils' second baseman made a throwing error on her sacrifice attempt. Junior Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) advanced both runners with a bunt and Murray scored Goss with a groundball to second.

Fredonia picked up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull ahead. A single and two-base error put freshman Eva FitzSimmons (Fairport, N.Y.) on third with one away in the fourth and senior Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y.) drove her in with a bunt single. Fredonia pulled ahead with a two-out rally in the fifth. After a pair of outs on the infield Keeler reached on a two-base throwing error. Junior Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y.) grounded one to third but the ball got by the Panther fielder to score Keeler.

PSU nearly tied the game in the sixth when Wood walked and stole second, but she was cut down at the plate after trying to score on Goss' sacrifice.

Sophomore Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) took the complete game loss for the Blue Devils giving up all four runs while allowing eight hits and three walks. Only one of the runs was earned.

Seidner, Moylan and Miller combined to give up just five base runners, all on singles, but the Panther defense made four miscues to lead to two unearned runs.

Deyo and Landers each had two hits for the Panthers, while Wood walked twice.

Plymouth State (4-4) will enjoy a day off tomorrow before facing Maryville College (9:00 a.m.) and Buffalo State (11:30 a.m.) on Wednesday (Mar. 21). Fredonia State drops to 6-8 with the loss.
