PSU Softball shuts out Buffalo State as win streak hits four

Moylan dominant in circle for Panthers, Deyo homers again

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) pitched 5.1 strong innings and junior Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) homered for the second straight game as the Plymouth State University softball team won its fourth in a row, blanking Buffalo State College 6-0 on Wednesday.

After Moylan threw a one-two-three top of the first, the Panthers wasted little time jumping on Buffalo State starter Nicole Adams (Lockport, N.Y.) in the bottom half. Senior Nina Murray (Saugus, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk and, following a strikeout, Deyo went deep for the second time to give PSU a quick 2-0 lead.

Moylan retired eight straight hitters after a leadoff single in the top of the second. Buffalo State's next baserunner came on a single by junior Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, N.J.) with two down in the fourth but Moylan got an infield popup to retire the side.

PSU tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Jen Landers (Berlin, N.H.) opened the frame with a single to left center and pinch runner Autumn Beyor (Highgate, Vt.) moved to second on a passed ball. After a sacrifice, sophomore Nora Butler (Tewksbury, Mass.) walked and stole second. Junior Mel Goss (Templeton, Mass.) worked a base-on-balls to load the bases with one out and, after a strikeout, senior Mary King (Lancaster, N.H.) beat out an infield grounder to drive in Beyor and push the lead to 3-0.

Moylan worked around an error and single in the fifth, escaping a second-and-third, two-out situation with a fly ball to leftfield. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning to chase Adams, but sophomore Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda, N.Y.) got a fielder's choice and strike out to keep PSU at bay.

After a fly out to start the sixth, the Bengals put two runners on with a single and walk. Sophomore Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) came on to relieve Moylan and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

Plymouth tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. Junior Lindsey Hall (Midlothian, Va.) doubled and moved to third on a bunt. Murray singled to plate Hall, then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Deyo walked and stole second and Landers came through with a two-out single to score both runners, giving the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Miller struck out the side in the top of the seventh, working around a one-out walk to pick up her second save of the year.

Deyo and Landers both reached base three times with two hits and a walk while driving in a pair of runs apiece. Murray and Deyo each scored twice and stole two bases. Moylan allowed just five base runners in her 5.1 innings (four hits, one walk) while striking out three to move to 3-1 and Miller struck out all five batters she faced.

Adams allowed four hits and five walks in her 4.1 innings in the circle for the Bengals and was responsible for three runs. Hayes allowed three runs on three hits and walk in the final 1.2 innings.

Plymouth State (6-4) will face Hope College (9:30 a.m.) and D'Youville College (11:00 a.m.) on Thursday, while Buffalo State (0-2) will battle St. Lawrence University and Worcester State University on day two of its spring trip.
