PSC Skiers strong at UConn/Brown Carnival

LINCOLN, N.H. - The Plymouth State College skiing teams continued their outstanding seasons Sunday with a pair of victories in the giant slalom event at Loon Mountain.

The Panther men's squad placed first overall among 19 teams, remaining unbeaten in all six races this season (three slalom and three giant slalom). The Panther women captured first place among 11 schools Sunday, and has now won all three GS races this year as well as placing in the top two in all three slalom races.

Freshman Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) continues to dominate the competition for PSC. She placed first again both Saturday and Sunday among the 71 skiers, and remarkably has won the individual title in all six races this season.

Curuta got excellent support from her teammates - junior Amanda Dileo (Ridgewood, NJ) was fourth in the GS; junior Sarah Thompson (Northboro, MA) was sixth in the GS and 16th in the slalom; senior Kyla Dunfee (Gilford, NH) was seventh in the GS and 11th in the slalom; and senior Heidi Hawkenson (Plymouth, NH) was 17th in the GS and 14th in the slalom.

Seniors M.C. Malboeuf (Gilford, NH), Ben Moody (New Boston, NH) and Jeff Cuff (North York, ONT) paced the Panther men to the two titles over the weekend, all three skiers with a pair of top 10 finishes. Malboeuf placed second in the GS and ninth in the slalom, Moody was third in the GS and sixth in the slalom, and Cuff finished sixth in the GS and fifth in the slalom. There were 85 skiers in the men's race.

Other strong PSC finishers included senior Ryan Welch (Rutland, VT), 10th in the GS, and freshman Brad Dowding (Shrewsbury, MA), 12th in the GS and 17th in the slalom.

The men's field included PSC, Boston College, U. of Massachusetts, Colby-Sawyer, Brown, Babson, St. Anselm, M.I.T., New England College and U. of Connecticut. The women's race included those same schools and Smith College.

The season continues next weekend (Feb. 7-8) with slalom and giant slalom races at Mt. Ascutney (Vt.).
