PSC Skiers finish runner-up at BC Carnival

ASCUTNEY MOUNTAIN, Vt. - Boston College celebrated its own Winter Carnival by sweeping the men's and women's slalom and giant slalom races held Saturday and Sunday at Ascutney Mountain.

Plymouth State finished a strong runner-up across the board. It is the first time this season that PSC has not won both men's races, while the Panther women had won at least one race a weekend each previous week until now. There were 10 schools and 88 skiers in the men's races, and 11 schools and 70 competitors in the women's.

PSC freshman Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) continued her sensational season, although she was actually defeated for the first time. She placed first overall in Saturday's slalom event, her amazing seventh straight individual title, but had her string broken Sunday when she finished a mere runner-up to Babson College's Michele Steinrotter.

Two other Panther women posted a pair of top 10 finishes. Junior Amanda Dileo (Ridgewood, NJ) was ninth in the slalom and seventh in the GS, and now has finished in the top 10 in six of eight races this season. Senior Kyla Dunfee (Gilford, NH) was 10th in the slalom and eighth in the GS, giving her seven top 12 finishes in eight races.

The Panther men were led by senior M.C. Malboeuf (Gilford, NH), who finished second overall in the slalom and 3rd in the GS. He has finished in the top 10 in every race, including six top-three performances. Senior Jeff Cuff (North York, ONT) was fourth in the slalom and ninth in the GS, giving him five top 10 finishes. Senior Ben Moody (New Boston, NH) finished seventh in the slalom and fifth in the GS, and has been in the top seven in every race this winter. Senior Ryan Welch (Rutland, VT) was 12th in the slalom and seventh in the GS, giving him five top-12 finishes.

The men's field included PSC, Boston College, U. of Massachusetts, Colby-Sawyer, Brown, Babson, St. Anselm, M.I.T., New England College and U. of Connecticut. The women's race included those same schools and Smith College.

The season continues next weekend (Feb. 14-15) with slalom and giant slalom races at Berkshire East Mountain (Mass.).
