PSC Skiers dominate Eastern Regionals
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The very successful season for the Plymouth State College skiing teams continued Monday as the Panthers completed an outstanding performance in the giant slalom at the Eastern Regional Championships at Waterville Valley.
The Panther men, who won the slalom on Sunday, made it a complete sweep Monday by winning the giant slalom. With victories in both events, the PSC men are the Eastern Regional combined champions for the second straight season.
The Plymouth State women did nearly as well. After winning the slalom Sunday, the Panthers came back Monday to finish runner-up in the giant slalom. PSC and Boston College finished in a tie for first in the combined standings, but BC won the tie-breaker to win the championship and leave PSC as runner-up.
The strong finishes for PSC qualifies both squads for the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association National Championships on Mar. 11-14 at Loon Mountain. The Panthers are guided by 12th-year head coach Kim Bownes.
"This was the strongest field the Eastern Regionals have ever had," said Bownes. "We were very steady. Between the two teams (PSC men and women), they skied great."
The two individual combined champions are both from Plymouth State - senior Ben Moody (New Boston, NH) in the men's competition and freshman Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) in the women's. Moody placed seventh in Monday's GS after winning the slalom Sunday to win the men's combined, and Curuta was second in the slalom and first in the GS Monday to earn the top women's honor.

Malboeuf (Gilford, NH), who was runner-up in Monday's GS after placing fifth in the slalom, finished fourth overall, while senior Jeff Cuff (Belfontaine, ONT) finished fourth in the slalom and 13th in the GS to place seventh in the combined standings.
Senior Kyla Dunfee (Gilford, NH) and juniors Sarah Thompson (Southboro, MA) and Amanda Dileo (Ridgewood, NJ) placed 7-8-9, respectively, in the women's combined. Dunfee was eighth in the slalom and 11th in the GS, Thompson was ninth in the slalom and 17th in the GS, and Dileo placed 13th in both events.
