Panther Men Win GS at Brown Carnival

LINCOLN, N.H. - After finishing first in seven of the first eight team races of the season, the Plymouth State College skiing teams won one of the four races over the weekend at the Brown University Winter Carnival at Loon Mountain.

The Panther men finished first Sunday in the giant slalom for the team's only victory; they were runner-up behind UMass in Saturday's slalom. The Panther women placed fourth in Saturday's slalom behind Boston College, UMass and Brown, and third in Sunday's GS behind UMass and BC. There were 10 schools competing, but each divided into split-squads to make 20 teams and nearly 200 skiers.

The Panthers were again led by juniors Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) and Fred DeBaets (St. Sauveur, Que.). Curuta won both weekend races, and has swept all six races this season. She has captured a remarkable 18 of 24 regular season races in her collegiate career. DeBaets finished runner-up in the slalom and came back to win the GS, his fourth victory in six races this winter. He has won eight races over the past two years, and has finished in the top five in 16 straight regular season events.

PSC had five men among the top 16 in the slalom and five among the top 15 in the GS. Freshman Justin Parent (Sanbornville, NH) had his best weekend of the young season, placing fourth in the GS and seventh in the slalom. Sophomore EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine) finished another strong weekend, placing sixth in both events, and junior Ryan Cornish (Carmel, NY) was 13th on both days.

Freshman Cherylanne Murphy (East Northport, NY) slipped to 15th in Saturday's women's slalom, but came back to take second place in Sunday's GS.

The Panthers will compete next weekend (Feb. 12-13) at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Mt. Ascutney in Vermont.
