Panthers complete weekend with GS sweep

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College's skiing teams wrapped up an outstanding opening weekend of the season Sunday by capturing first place in both the men's and women's giant slalom races at the UMass Winter Carnival at Berkshire East Mountain in Western Massachusetts.

The Panthers also swept first place in both slalom events on Saturday.

The PSC men had the top two individual finishers and seven of the top 15 skiers to win the team GS title. Colby-Sawyer finished runner-up, followed by UMass, Boston College, New England College, Brown, Babson, St. Anselm, MIT and Uconn.

The Panther women had three of the top four individual finishers to earn the team GS title. Boston College finished runner-up, followed by Colby-Sawyer, Smith, UMass, Brown, St. Anselm, Babson, New England College, Uconn and MIT.

Senior Jake Manseau (Henniker, N.H.) and junior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.) finished 1-2 for the Panthers in the men's race, as Manseau earned his first career victory. Senior Fred DeBaets (St. Sauveur, QUE) provided strong support with a fifth-place finish, followed by sophomore Justin Parent (Sanbornville, NH) in ninth, junior EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine) in 10th, senior Dan Gelvin (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in 14th, and junior Brad Sheehan (Belmont, N.H.) in 15th.

The Panthers also dominated the women's race, with senior Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) taking first, sophomore Cher Murphy (East Northport, NY) finishing third, and freshman Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) placing fourth. Curuta continues to be remarkable, winning for the 23rd time in her 30 collegiate regular season races.

Also helping PSC to the women's team victory was freshman Erin Reilly (Marion, Conn.) in 26th and sophomore Janine Iannillo (Monroe, N.Y.) in 28th.

PSC returns to action next weekend (Jan. 27-28), hosting the Plymouth State Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley.
