PSC Men win GS at Berkshire East, Women 5th

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - In the second to last race of the regular season, the Plymouth State College men's ski team took first place Friday and the women's squad finished fifth in the giant slalom at the Smith College Winter Carnival at Berkshire East Mountain in Western Massachusetts.

The Panther men, who won the GS for the third time in five outings this season, finished ahead of runner-up Colby-Sawyer and third place UMass. PSC finished runner-up in the two GS races this season that they did not win.

The PSC women's team was hurt Friday by falls by its top two racers, and slipped to fifth place overall behind Boston College, Brown, UMass and Colby-Sawyer. The Panthers have two first places, two fifth places and a third in the five GS races this season.

PSC skiers finished 1-2 in the men's race Friday, and had eight of the top 17 individuals. Junior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass.) continued his outstanding winter, capturing the men's individual title for the sixth time in nine races this season. He has two firsts, a second and a third in five GS events this year. Senior Fred DeBaets (St. Sauveur, QUE) was runner-up, giving him a first, two seconds, a fourth and a fifth place in the five GS races.

Providing strong support for the Panthers were sophomore Justin Parent (Sanbornville, N.H.) in fourth, freshman Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) in 11th, senior Jake Manseau (Henniker, N.H.) in 13th, sophomore Bill Feather (Waterville Valley, N.H.) in 14th, junior EJ Cheney (Bethel, Maine) in 16th, and senior Dan Gelvin (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in 17th.

Freshman Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was the top Panther finisher in the women's race, placing fourth overall. She has three top four finishes in the GS this season. Senior Anda Curuta (Sibiu, Romania) and sophomore Cher Murphy (East Northport, N.Y.), PSC's top two skiers, both fell and Curuta slipped to 17th place and Murphy to 34th.

The other top Panther finishers included freshman Jessica Santiago (Campton, N.H.) in 28th and senior Tara Eretzian (Turner, Maine) in 30th.

The regular season concludes Saturday (Feb. 17) with the slalom at Berkshire East.
