Mitchell, Swaffield lead team at PSC Carnival
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The Plymouth State College men's ski team had an excellent weekend at the PSC Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley, winning both the slalom and giant slalom races, while the Panther women's team finished in the middle of the pack both days.
The PSC men edged in-state rival Colby-Sawyer College to take both Saturday's slalom and Sunday's GS, with the Chargers finishing runner-up both days. Boston College was third in the slalom and UMass was third in the GS, and there were 10 men's teams competing.
The Panther women finished sixth in the slalom on Saturday and fifth in the GS on Sunday, with 11 teams competing in the women's races. Boston College won both events, edging runner-up Brown University in the slalom and Colby-Sawyer in the GS.
Leading the way for Plymouth State was senior Tim Mitchell (Ashland, Mass) and sophomore Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Mitchell captured first place in both men's races, rebounding from a disappointing performance a week ago to register his first wins of the year and the 11th and 12th of his career. Swaffield placed fifth in the slalom on Saturday and came back with the winning time in the slalom on Sunday, the first victory of her collegiate career.
Mitchell had plenty of help from his teammates in the men's races. Senior Jake Manseau (Henniker, N.H.) placed fifth both days, freshmen Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) placed third in the slalom and seventh in the GS, and senior E.J. Cheney (Bethel, Maine) placed ninth on Saturday and eighth on Sunday.
PSC's top women's finishers after Swaffield were sophomore Erin Reilly (Marion, Conn.), 31st in the slalom and 25th in the GS, and junior Heidi Mann (Merrimack, N.H.), 33rd in the slalom and 26th in the GS.
The Panther teams will compete again next weekend (Feb. 2-3) at the Brown Winter Carnival at Loon Mountain (N.H.).
