Swaffield out of GS at Nationals

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - It was a good-news, bad-news day on the ski slopes for Plymouth State College sophomore Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.), competing at the U.S. Collegiate Ski Association's National Championships at Waterville Valley.

Swaffield, the only Panther woman to qualify for the nationals, posted the third fastest time in the first run of Wednesday's giant slalom race. Unfortunately, Swaffield was disqualified after straddling a gate on the lower portion of the course.

"Whitney skied really, really well," said PSC head coach Kim Bownes. "As disappointed as we are with the end result, we're very proud of her with the way she's skiing. I never imagined she would have been in the top three after one run, so while we're disappointed with the end result, we're very happy with the way she's skiing."

Swaffield, who finished runner-up in the GS and the combined alpine at the Eastern Regional Championships last month, will have another chance on Friday in the slalom event.

The Panther men's squad, which qualified for the nationals as a team, will compete in the giant slalom on Thursday and the slalom on Saturday. The Panthers have finished second at Nationals the past two years.
