PSC Women capture slalom

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The Plymouth State College women's alpine skiing team captured the slalom race Saturday at the PSC Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley, while the Panthers finished fourth overall in the men's slalom.

The PSC women placed first out of 11 teams in the combined time of the two runs, finishing ahead of runner-up Colby-Sawyer, Brown, UMass Amherst, Smith, Boston College, St. Anselm, UConn, MIT, Babson and New England College.

Junior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) led the Panthers, placing third and ninth overall, respectively. Freshman Kelsey Real (Lanesboro, Mass.) was the 13th place finisher and classmate Kristy Hoch (China, Maine) ended up in 18th.

The Panther men placed fourth in the slalom behind Boston College, Colby-Sawyer and UMass Amherst and ahead of Babson, UConn, St. Anselm, Brown, New England College and MIT.

Sophomore Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) captured first place to lead the Panthers. Freshman Billy Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.) was the next PSC finisher, placing 17th, while freshman Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.), sophomore Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) and junior Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) placed 22nd, 24th, and 26th, respectively.

The PSC Winter Carnival continues Sunday at Waterville Valley with the giant slalom.
