LINCOLN, N.H. - The Plymouth State College alpine ski teams finished in the middle of the pack in the slalom races Saturday at the Brown University Winter Carnival held at Loon Mountain.
The Panther men's team had four of the top 19 individuals and finished fourth overall out of the 10 schools. The PSC women's team had the second place individual and finished fifth out of 11 schools.
Junior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was the top Panther competitor on the day, finishing runner-up in the women's race, 0.01 of a second behind Boston College's Lori Williams for the title. Freshman Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was 14th for the Panthers, and sophomore Jessica Bouchard (Temple, Maine) and freshman Kristy Hoch (China, Maine) placed 29th and 31st, respectively.
The team victory in the women's race went to UMass Amherst, followed by BC, Brown, Colby-Sawyer, PSC, Smith, St. Anselm, MIT, New England College, Babson and UConn.
Sophomore Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) led a solid contingent of Panther men, winning the second of the two runs and placing fifth overall. PSC displayed its depth with junior Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) finishing 17th, freshman Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) in 18th, and junior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) in 19th.
Colby-Sawyer took the team victory in the men's race. UMass was runner-up, followed by BC, PSC, Babson, Brown, NEC, MIT, UConn, and St. Anselm.
The skiing continues Sunday at Loon with two runs of the giant slalom.
