PSC finishes 3rd and 6th at Ascutney

ASCUTNEY, Vt. - The Plymouth State College men's alpine skiing team had five of the top 16 finishers Saturday and placed third in the team standings at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain. The Panther women's team had two of its top skiers fall, and PSC ended up in sixth place overall.

Sophomore Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) paced the Panther men, placing fourth overall out of nearly 100 skiers. Barlow has finished in the top 10 in all seven races this season (four slalom, three giant slalom). He received solid support from his teammates, as junior Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) finished 12th, freshmen Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) and Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) tied for 13th, and sophomore Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) placed 16th.

The Panther men finished third behind Boston College and Colby-Sawyer and ahead of UMass Amherst, Brown, Babson, MIT, St. Anselm, UConn and New England College.

Freshman Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the PSC women's team, as she placed 16th overall among the 80 skiers. Junior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was in third place after the first run but suffered a slight fall in the second run and finished 18th overall. Freshman Kristy Hoch (China, Maine) was next for PSC, placing 28th, and senior Morgan Fippinger (Burlington, Conn.) was 33rd.

Boston College also won the women's race, followed by Brown, UMass, Colby-Sawyer, Smith, PSC, St. Anselm, MIT, Babson, UConn and New England College.

The competition continues Sunday at Ascutney with two runs of the giant slalom.
