PSU Men’s Skiers finish off weekend sweep at Berkshire East

CHARLEMONT, Mass. - The Plymouth State University men's alpine ski team finished off a successful weekend Sunday, winning the giant slalom against nine other schools at the UMass Winter Carnival at Berkshire East Mountain in Western Massachusetts.

The Panther men, who also won the slalom event on Saturday, had all 10 skiers finish in the top 22 among the 80 competitors in Sunday's GS race. The PSU women's team didn't fare quite as well, but placed fifth in the GS with two top 12 finishers.

Junior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.), senior Garrett Lashar (Kingfield, Maine) and sophomore Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) led the Panthers, placing fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively, in the GS. Harlow and Barlow were top three finishers in Saturday's slalom.

The other seven Panthers to finish in the top 22 Sunday included sophomore Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) in 13th, sophomore Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 15th, senior Brent Grygiel (Windham, Maine) in 16th, sophomore Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) in 17th, junior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) in 18th, and Billy Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.) in 19th, and freshman Andy Bischoff (Duluth, Minn.) in 22nd.

PSU was an easy winner in the men's team scoring, well ahead of the field, which included (in order of place) Boston College, Babson, Colby-Sawyer, UMass, MIT, Brown, UConn, Saint Anselm and New England College.

Senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.), who was eighth in Saturday's slalom, came back with a sixth place in Sunday's GS to lead the PSU women. She was followed closely from behind by sophomore Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.), who placed 12th. The other top Panther finishers included junior Jessica Bouchard (Temple, Maine) in 34th and sophomore Kristina Hoch (China, Maine) in 36th.

UMass finished first in the women's team scoring, ahead of (in order of finish) Colby-Sawyer, Brown, Boston College, Plymouth State, Smith, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.
