PSU Men’s Skiers complete season sweep in giant slalom

SUNAPEE, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's alpine ski team completed a season sweep in the giant slalom races, taking top honors among 10 schools Friday at the Colby-Sawyer College Winter Carnival held at Mount Sunapee.

The Panther men were 5-for-5 in GS team events this season. The PSU women's squad has been consistent this winter, finishing either fourth or fifth in the GS races, including a fifth place on Friday at Sunapee.

PSU continued to show outstanding depth in the men's race, with four of the top 15 placers and eight of the top 25 among the 80 skiers. Junior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) led the way with a fourth place, finishing in the top seven in all five GS races this winter. Other Panther Top 10 finishers included sophomore Rob Kiely (New London, N.H.) in seventh, sophomore Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) in eighth, and sophomore Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 10th. The places matched the season best GS finishes for Barlow, Prendergast, and Bartlett, and surpassed individual season bests for Kiely and freshman Andy Bischoff (Duluth, Minn.), who was 14th.

Senior Whitney Swaffield (Wolfeboro, N.H.) led the Panther contingent in the women's race, bringing home sixth place among 60 skiers. She placed in the top six in four out of five GS races this season. Freshman Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) was PSU's next finisher in 20th, followed by sophomores Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and Kelsey Real (Lanesboro, Mass.) in 22nd and 26th, respectively.

The nine opponents are the same all season, and none have been able to top the Panthers in the men's GS. Saturday's order of finish behind PSU were Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, UMass Amherst, Babson, Brown, MIT, Saint Anselm, UConn and New England College. It was BC edging Brown for the women's GS title this week, followed by Colby-Sawyer, UMass, PSU, Smith, St. Anselm, Babson, MIT and UConn.

The regular season concludes Saturday (2/14) with a slalom race at Pat's Peak in Henniker, N.H. The Eastern Regional Championships are a week from Sunday and Monday (2/22-23) at Waterville Valley (N.H.).
