PSU Skiers finish very strong in slalom at Plymouth State Winter Carnival
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Freshman Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) captured the women's slalom event for the second straight week Saturday, highlighting the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams' strong finishes at the Plymouth State Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley.
Caflisch's first place in the slalom led the Panther women's squad to a second place finish among the 10 competing teams. On the men's side, the Panthers captured first place among 10 teams with a dominating performance, as five of the top nine finishers among the 80 skiers represented PSU.
Caflisch won the women's race by more than three seconds in a field of 68 skiers. The other top Panther women included freshman Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.), who finished in 10th place, and junior Kristina Hoch (China, Maine), who ended up in 20th.
Sophomore Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.), junior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) and senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) finished 2-3-4 among the 80 skiers to anchor PSU's dominating performance in the men's slalom. Freshman Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) and senior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) were also eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Panthers easily won the men's team title, finishing ahead of (in order) UMass, Babson, Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, MIT, Brown, Saint Anselm, UConn, and New England College. Brown took the women's team victory, followed by (in order) PSU, Colby-Sawyer, Smith, Boston College, UMass, Babson, MIT, Saint Anselm and UConn.
The Plymouth State Winter Carnival continues on Sunday (Jan. 23) at Waterville Valley with the giant slalom.
