Harlow leads PSU Men’s Skiers at Plymouth State Winter Carnival giant slalom

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) outraced the field of 85 ski racers Sunday to capture the men's giant slalom and lead the Plymouth State University men's alpine ski team to a first place finish among 10 schools at the Plymouth State Winter Carnival at Waterville Valley.

The Panther women's team struggled through its weakest performance of the season, suffering some mistakes on the second run to finish sixth overall among the 10 teams.

Harlow led another dominant PSU men's performance with his first place as the Panthers represented six of the top 13 finishers.  Senior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) and juniors Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) and Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) finished in the 6-7-8 spots, and senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) and freshman Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) ended up 12th and 13th.

PSU cruised to the men's team title over (in order) UMass, Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, Babson, MIT, Brown, Saint Anselm, UConn, and New England College.

After having two skiers finish in the top 11 (of 70 skiers) in all three previous races this season, the Panthers' top finish Sunday was junior Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.), who tied for 12th.  The next PSU finishers were freshman Ashley Clark (North Woodstock, N.H.) in 23rd, freshman Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) in 27th, and sophomore Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 28th.

UMass won the women's team title, followed by (in order) Brown, Colby-Sawyer, Boston College, Smith, Plymouth State, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.

The Panther skiers return to competition on Saturday, Feb. 5, with slalom races at Tenney Mountain, and Sunday, Feb. 6, with giant slalom races at Loon Mountain.
