ASCUTNEY, Vt. - Plymouth State University's men's alpine ski team continued to dominate the MacConnell Division of the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference over the weekend, sweeping both the slalom and giant slalom races at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain Resort.
The Panther men defeated nine other schools in both Saturday's slalom and Sunday's giant slalom. The PSU women's team didn't have quiet as much success but had a solid third place among 10 schools in the slalom on Saturday and a sixth place in the GS on Sunday.
PSU had three men in the top 10 and five in the top 20 in the slalom (among 88 racers) to capture the team title. The Panthers were even more dominant in winning the GS, with four in the top 10 and six in the top 20.
Leading the way for PSU was sophomore Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.), who placed second in the slalom and fourth in the GS. Senior Tyler Barlow (South Burlington, Vt.) was eighth in the slalom and seventh in the GS, and classmate Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) finished seventh and 10th, respectively.
Other strong finishers for PSU included freshman Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.), who was ninth in the GS; junior Bill Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.), who was 14th in the slalom and 17th in the GS; junior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.), who was 15th in the GS; and senior Joey Miller (Auburn, Maine), who was 20th in the slalom.
The Panther women had three finishers in the top 15 (among 65 racers) en route to the third place team finish in the slalom. PSU had three of the top 18 finishers in the GS but slipped to sixth place.
PSU's top skier, freshman Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.), had a strong third-place finish in the slalom, but fell in the GS and placed 18th. Junior Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and freshman Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) were solid finishers for PSU in both races, Heroux placing ninth in the slalom and 12th in the GS and Marvelli taking 15th in the slalom and a team-best seventh in the GS.
