WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Senior Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) and sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) both finished runner-up in the slalom races Saturday afternoon at the PSU Winter Carnival, hosted by Plymouth State University at Waterville Valley.
Harlow's second-place in the men's race led the Panthers to first place among 10 schools in the men's team standings, while Caflisch helped the Panthers to fourth place among nine schools in the women's standings. The PSC men finished ahead of (in order) Colby-Sawyer, UMass, Boston College and Babson, while BC took the women's race, ahead of UMass, Brown, PSU and Colby-Sawyer.
The PSU Winter Carnival continues Sunday at Waterville Valley with the giant slalom races for both men and women.
There were four PSU men among the top seven finishers Saturday out of more than 80 skiers in the men's slalom. Harlow was second, followed by senior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in fourth, senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) in sixth, and sophomore Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) in seventh. Senior Bill Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.) rounded out the top Panther finishers, placing 13th.
PSU had four top-20 finishers among the 65 entries in the women's race. Caflisch was second, followed by freshman Kate Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) in 13th, senior Kristina Hoch (China, Maine) in 17th, and freshman Paige Frohock (Boise, Idaho) in 18th.
