NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's ski team won its second race of the season Sunday, taking first among nine schools in the slalom event at the University of Connecticut Winter Carnival held at Cranmore Mountain.
The Panther men had four of the top six finishers overall and ran away with the team scoring, finishing over three and a half seconds ahead of runner-up UMass Amherst. Boston College was third, with Colby-Sawyer, Babson and MIT rounding out the top six.
The PSU women's team struggled through off days by three of its top skiers, and finished fifth among 10 schools. Brown University won the women's title, with Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, Smith and PSU comprising the top five.
A pair of newcomers led the PSU men's squad as sophomore transfer Vincent DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) and freshman Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) finished 2-3 overall among the 78 racers. Seniors Topher Harlow (North Conway, N.H.) and Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) were right behind in the fifth and sixth spots, respectively, and classmates Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) and Billy Halberstadt (Concord, N.H.) were a solid 12th and 13th, respectively.
Sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was PSU's top finisher in the women's race with a season's-best eighth place among the 62 racers. Senior Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) was next for the Panthers in 15th, followed by junior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 22nd and sophomore Meghann McKenney (Hubbardston, Mass.) in 24th.
The PSU teams return to competition next Saturday and Sunday at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain in Vermont.
