PSU Men’s Skiers complete weekend sweep; Panther women place third in GS after win in slalom

ASCUTNEY, Vt. - The Plymouth State University ski teams completed their best weekend of the season Sunday in the giant slalom races at the Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain.

The Panther men's squad completed the weekend sweep of the nine competing schools, capturing the team giant slalom title Sunday after winning the slalom on Saturday.  Sunday was PSU's first GS victory of the year after three previous slalom wins.  The Panther women followed up their slalom win on Saturday, their first in three years, with a third-place finish in Sunday's GS.

PSU once again used strong team depth to win the men's GS, with five Panther finishers among the top 18 (out of 78 racers).  Senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.) and sophomore Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) were the top performers for PSU for the second straight day, with Demetry earning his second straight third-place finish and posting his seventh consecutive top-10 finish, and Hey placing sixth in Sunday's GS after posting a career-best runner-up finish in Saturday's slalom.  Senior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) was not far behind, placing 10th, while sophomore Vincent DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) finished 12th and freshman Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) came in 18th.

Sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) continued her outstanding season for the Panther women, following up her first victory of the season in Saturday's slalom with a runner-up finish Sunday in the GS.  Caflisch has finished in the top four (among 64 racers) in seven out of eight races this season. Freshman Katie Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) came in eighth, her second straight top 10 finish and third in the last four races.  Three other Panthers finished in the top 20, with sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) in 12th, senior Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) in 17th, and junior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) in 20th.

PSU won the men's GS race over (in order) Colby-Sawyer, UMass Amherst, Boston College, Babson, MIT, Brown, UConn and Saint Anselm.  The order of finish in the women's race was Colby-Sawyer, UMass Amherst, PSU, BC, Brown, Smith, MIT, Saint Anselm, UConn and Babson.

The PSU ski teams wrap up the regular season next weekend, with the GS Friday at Sunapee (N.H.) and the slalom Saturday at Pat's Peak (N.H.)
