PSU Ski teams finish in middle of pack in GS at Sunapee

NEWBURY, N.H.

- A week after turning in their strongest performances of the season, the Plymouth State University ski teams struggled to their lowest finishes of the year Friday in the giant slalom races at the Colby-Sawyer Winter Carnival at Mount Sunapee.

The Panther men's team placed fourth out of nine teams, and the Panther women's team finished sixth out of 10 teams.  The men's squad had finished in the top three in the four previous GS races, while the women had been in the top four in all of the other GS events.  There were strong winds on the course all day, and several top PSU skiers fell and did not finish.

The individual highlight was provided by senior Chad Demetry (Francestown, N.H.), who has been a model on consistency this winter.  He placed fourth in the field of 82 racers, his sixth straight finish in the top six.  Demetry has finished no worse than 12th among 80 skiers in all nine races this season.

PSU's next finishers in the men's race were freshman Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) in 11th, sophomore Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) in 14th, senior Skip Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 17th and freshmen Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 31st.

Sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was PSU's top finisher in the women's race with an 11th place among the 63 racers.  She's been in the top 15 in five straight races and in the top 20 in eight out of nine races this season.  Freshman Paige Frohock (Boise, Idaho) was next across the line for the Panthers in 16th, followed by freshman Kristen Beadon (Southbury, Conn.) in 19th, senior Chantelle Heroux (Cooperstown, N.Y.) in 23rd, and sophomore Meghann McKenney (Hubbardston, Mass.) in 26th.

Colby-Sawyer won the men's race, with UMass Amherst second, Boston College third, Plymouth State fourth, Babson fifth, MIT sixth, Brown seventh, UConn eighth and Saint Anselm ninth.

UMass Amherst took the women's standings, followed by (in order) Boston College, Colby-Sawyer, Brown, Smith, PSU, MIT, UConn, Saint Anselm and Babson.

The teams wrap up the regular season Saturday with slalom races at the Saint Anselm Winter Carnival at Pat's Peak.
