PSU Women’s Skiers place sixth in slalom at USCSA National Championships

- The Plymouth State University women's ski team rebounded from a disappointing performance in Wednesday's giant slalom with a strong effort in Friday's slalom race at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships, held at Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Panther women finished in sixth place in the 18-team field, and fourth among Eastern schools.  Defending champion Sierra Nevada College won the team title, followed by Boston College, Rocky Mountain College, Colby-Sawyer College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and PSU.  The Panthers had stumbled to an 18th place in the GS on Wednesday.

"I was happy with the way we came back after Wednesday's disappointment," said PSU veteran head coach Kim Bownes.  "The ladies came together and skied much better across the board."

As she has been all year, sophomore Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y./Northwood School) was PSU's top finisher, earning Second Team All-America honors with a seventh place among the 97 skiers. Caflisch (left), who placed 19th in the GS, was making her first collegiate national championship appearance, as she missed last year's races with a knee injury suffered two days before the competition started.

Sophomore Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was PSU's next-best finisher, coming in 17th place and just missing All-America recognition (which go to the top 15 racers). Freshman Paige Frohock (Boise, Idaho) was next for the Panthers in 32nd place, and senior Kristina Hoch (China, Maine) came in 38th. Freshman Katie Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) suffered a fall and did not finish.

The Panthers qualified for this year's USCSA National Championships by finishing in a tie for third at the Eastern Regional Championships last month at Waterville Valley.

The combined individual and team alpine results will be announced Saturday, and the championships conclude Saturday with the men's slalom.
