WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Plymouth State University junior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) won the slalom race for the second straight week Saturday afternoon, leading the Panther men's ski team to a second place finish, while classmate Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) took third in the women's race, helping the Panther ladies to a third place finish. The competition is part of the Plymouth State Winter Carnival at PSU's home mountain, Waterville Valley.
DiNapoli finished first in the combined time of two runs, a slalom race that included 80 competitors. Junior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) placed fourth overall for PSU, senior Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) was 10th, and sophomore Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.), senior Travis Larson (Franconia, N.H.) and freshman Dan Hitchcock (Carabasset Valley, Maine) came in 14-15-16, respectively.
The Panther men finished runner-up to the University of Massachusetts in the team standings, but ahead of (in order of finish) Boston College, Colby-Sawyer College, Babson College, MIT, Saint Anselm College, Brown University and the University of Connecticut.
Caflisch posted her second straight strong finish in the slalom, having won the race last week. She took third among 70 racers on Saturday. PSU's next best finishers were sophomore Kate Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) in 11th, freshman Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) in 15th, and juniors Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) and Meaghann McKenney (Hubbardston, Mass.) tied for 16th.
The PSU women finished in third behind Colby-Sawyer and Brown, but ahead of UMass, Boston College, Smith, Babson, St. Anselm, UConn and MIT.
The same teams will compete in another slalom race Sunday at Waterville Valley.
