PSU Skiers finish in middle of pack in GS at Sunapee

SUNAPEE, N.H. - The Plymouth State University ski teams are both in third place in the MacConnell Division standings after placing in the middle of the pack in Sunday's giant slalom races held at Mount Sunapee.

The Panther men finished in fourth place Sunday in a field of nine teams, while the Panther women took fifth among 10 schools. PSU is third in the men's division season standings behind the University of Massachusetts and Boston College, with Colby-Sawyer College and MIT rounding out the top five. PSU is third in the women's standings behind Colby-Sawyer and BC, with Brown University and UMass in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Junior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) was the top Panther finisher in Sunday's men's GS, crossing the line in ninth place among the 79 racers. Hey has been in the top nine in all six alpine races this winter. Junior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) was not far behind in 11th place, and sophomore Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y.) posted a career-best 14th place finish.

UMass won the men's team standings in Sunday's GS, followed by BC, Colby-Sawyer, PSU, MIT, Babson, St. Anselm, UConn, and Brown.

The Panther women were shut out of the top 10 on Sunday, but had seven racers finish between 14th and 26th. Junior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) was the top PSU finisher in 14th place among the 70 women's skiers, with sophomore Katie Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) coming in 16th, and junior Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) and senior Amelia Hough (Gloucester, Mass.) taking 19th and 20th, respectively.

Colby-Sawyer won Sunday's women's GS, followed by (in order) BC, Brown, Smith, PSU, UMass, Saint Anselm, Babson, MIT, and UConn. The skiers will be back on the slopes Friday with a slalom race at Wachusett Mountain (Mass.) and Saturday with a GS race at Loon Mountain (N.H.).
