PRINCETON, Mass. - Juniors Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) and Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) finished first and second among 80 men's skiers Friday at Wachusett Mountain, leading Plymouth State University to the men's team victory in the slalom races at the Brown University Winter Carnival.
Junior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) posted a strong third-place finish out of 70 racers in the women's slalom, leading the Panthers to a third place finish in the women's standings.
Hey recorded his first individual victory of the season, after previously finishing runner-up twice and fourth twice. He has finished no lower than ninth in all seven races this season. DiNapoli finished second to Hay Friday after winning three straight slalom races last month. PSU had two other top 10 finishers, as senior Matt Prendergast (Westminster, Mass.) came in seventh and sophomore Josh Bedard (Laconia, N.H.) crossed the line in ninth.
The Panther men won the team standings in the slalom for the second time this season. Colby-Sawyer was runner-up, followed by Boston College, the University of Massachusetts, MIT, Babson, Saint Anselm, Brown and the University of Connecticut.
Caflisch continued her outstanding season with the third place in the women's race. She has been in the top four overall in five of the seven races, and has finished no lower than 14th. Sophomore Kate Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) was a top 10 finisher for the third time this season, coming in 10th place, while freshman Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) pulled in a solid 14th place finish.
Boston College topped the women's team standings, with Colby-Sawyer second and PSU third. Brown, Smith, UMass, Saint Anselm, MIT, UConn and Babson rounded out the women's order of finish.
The schools will compete again on Saturday in a giant slalom race at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H.
