PSU Skiers stumble in giant slalom at Ascutney

ASCUTNEY, Vt. - Several Plymouth State University skiers suffered falls on Saturday, and the Panther men's and women's ski racing teams both took fourth place in the giant slalom races Boston College Winter Carnival at Ascutney Mountain.

The Panther men had two top 10 finishers and took fourth as a team out of nine schools, behind BC, the University of Massachusetts and Colby-Sawyer College and ahead of MIT, Saint Anselm College, Babson College, Brown University and the University of Connecticut. The Panthers were shut out of the top 10 individuals in the women's race and placed fourth as a team, behind BC, Colby-Sawyer and Brown and ahead of Smith, Saint Anselm, UMass, Babson, UConn and MIT.

Junior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) and freshman Owen Carey-Hatch (Gilford, N.H.) had the top performances for PSU. DiNapoli placed seventh among the 80 racers, his sixth top-10 finish out of nine starts this season, while Carey-Hatch was right behind with his season-best eighth place finish. Sophomore Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) was the next Panther finisher in 18th.

Freshman Shelley Bowen (Gilford, N.H.) was first across the line for the Panther women in 13th place, her second-best performance of the year. Sophomore Katie Van Riper (Carrabasset Valley, Maine) came in 16th, finishing in the top 20 for the eighth time in nine races this winter, and freshman Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) finished in the top 20 for the sixth time this season with an 18th place.

The schools will be back on the Ascutney course on Sunday for another round of giant slalom races.
