PSU Men’s Skiers win giant slalom race again at Sunapee

SUNAPEE, N.H. - For the second straight day, the Plymouth State University men's ski team won the giant slalom race at Mount Sunapee, taking the team title on Saturday afternoon with four skiers placing in the top 10.  The Panther women had just one top 10 finisher and slipped to sixth place.

Senior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) finished off a strong weekend for the Panthers, finishing runner-up on Saturday in a race that included 76 skiers.  DiNapoli was the winner in Friday's GS race.  Freshman Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) also had a good weekend for PSU, finishing third on Saturday after his tie for fifth on Friday.

Other top finishers for the Panthers in Saturday's men's race included freshman Austin Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in ninth, freshman Gary Rumley (Rumford, Maine) in 10th, and junior Seth Bartlett (Silver Lake, N.H.) in 22nd.  PSU won the race Saturday despite falls by two of its top racers, sophomore Owen Carey-Hatch (Gilford, N.H.), who placed third on Friday, and senior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.), who was tied for fifth on Friday.

PSU was first among nine schools in Saturday's men's race, followed by (in order of finish) Boston College, UMass Amherst, Colby-Sawyer College, MIT, Universityi of Connecticut, Babson College, Saint Anselm College, and Brown University.

Senior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) was the top Panther finisher in the women's race, placing 10th among the 81 skiers.  Sophomore Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) was 24th, followed by junior Katie Van Riper (Carabasset Valley, Maine) and junior Stephanie Guilbeault (Dunbarton, N.H.) in 37th and 38th, respectively.  Three Panthers did not finish the race and one other was disqualified.

The Colby-Sawyer women duplicated what the PSU men did, winning the team title for the second straight day.  The rest of the standings (in order of finish) were Boston College, UMass, Brown, Smith, PSU, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.

The teams will compete next weekend at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway, N.H., with a giant slalom race on Friday and a slalom race on Saturday.
