More strong performances by PSU Skiers

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's ski racing team is having a strong season.  It's just that it's not as dominant as the season the PSU men's team is having.

The Panther men captured their sixth straight victory Sunday at Waterville Valley, finishing first among nine teams in the giant slalom portion of the PSU Winter Carnival, while the Panther women matched their top finish of the season with a third-place among 10 schools. PSU has won all six men's races this winter (four GS, two slalom) while the women placed third for the second straight day.

PSU had three of the top four and seven of the top 14 finishers among the 81 competitors in the men's race.  Freshman Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett), senior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) and sophomore Owen Carey-Hatch (Gilford, N.H.) finished 2-3-4 for the Panthers, while senior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) was right behind in sixth.  The other Panthers in the top 15 included three freshmen -- Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in 10th, Chris Roche (Hingham, Mass.) in 12th, and Austin Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in 14th.

PSU outraced the University of Massachusetts for the men's team score.  Babson College finished third, followed by Colby-Sawyer College, MIT, Boston College, University of Connecticut, Saint Anselm College and Brown University.

Freshman Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) turned in an outstanding performance for the Panthers, finishing second overall among the 81 women's racers. Sophomore Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) posted a career-best eighth place, while senior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) was the next Panther finisher in 18th and senior Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) was 25th.

Boston College rebounded from Saturday's fifth place in the slalom to win Sunday's women's giant slalom.  Colby-Sawyer was second and PSU third, followed by Brown, UMass, Smith College, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT and UConn.

The teams will return to racing next weekend, with a slalom race Saturday at Pat's Peak in Henniker, N.H., and a giant slalom race Sunday at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H.
