PSU Skiers post strong finishes in giant slalom race at Loon
LINCOLN, N.H. - It was another good day on the slopes Sunday for the Plymouth State University ski racing teams, as the Panther men finished first among nine schools and the women third among 10 schools in a giant slalom race at Loon Mountain.
The Panther men remain undefeated on the season, winning all five giant slalom races this winter and the three slalom events. The Panther women matched their season-best third place. The regular season concludes with a pair of slalom races next Saturday and Sunday at Ascutney Mountain in Vermont.
Freshman Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) continued his outstanding rookie campaign for PSU, recording his first individual victory among the 80 men's racers. He had finished runner-up in the previous three races, and has finished no lower than fifth in all eight racing events this winter.
The PSU men continued to dominate the field, with five of the top eight overall finishers. Sophomore Owen Carey-Hatch (Gilford, N.H.) was runner-up behind Ostroski, with freshman Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in fifth, freshman Chris Roche (Hingham, Mass.) in seventh, and senior Jason Hey (Northboro, Mass.) in eighth. Senior Vinnie DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) and junior Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y.) also posted solid 12th and 18th-place finishes for the Panthers.
Freshman Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) was the top finisher for the Panther women, placing eighth among the 84 racers and matching her second-best finish of the year. Senior Melissa Caflisch (Clymer, N.Y.) was not far behind in 10th, her sixth top-10 finish in eight races this season. Sophomore Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) and senior Kara Marvelli (Franconia, N.H.) also posted solid 12th and 18th-place finishes for the Panthers.
PSU easily won the men's team standings over runner-up University of Massachusetts. Colby-Sawyer College was third, followed by Babson College, Boston College, MIT, Saint Anselm, University of Connecticut, and Brown University.
Colby-Sawyer took the women's team standings, with Boston College runner-up and PSU third. The rest of the team standings were Brown, UMass, Smith, Babson, Saint Anselm, MIT, and UConn.
