SUNAPEE, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's and women's ski teams opened the 2009 racing season Friday with third- and sixth-places finishes, respectively, in a giant slalom race at the Colby-Sawyer College Winter Carnival held at Mount Sunapee.
The Panther men had two skiers finish in the top 10 and four in the top 15, leading to a third-place finish among nine schools, while the women had the fourth-place individual and took sixth place out of 10 teams. There were roughly 80 skiers in each of the men's and women's races.
Junior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) was the top finisher for PSU, taking fourth place in the women's race. There was a big gap before the next Panther women to finish, as senior Katie Van Riper (Temple, Maine/Mt. Abram/Carrabasset Valley) came in 30th, sophomore Hannah Swartz (Rochester, N.Y.) was 31st, and junior Alex Albrecht (Canterbury, N.H./Carrabasset Valley) finished 33rd.
Sophomores Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) and Willie Colt (Hanover, N.H.) paced the Panther men with sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Bailey (West Hurley, N.Y.) and senior Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) were not far behind, taking 13th and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Joe Healey (Fitchburg, Mass.) was in ninth place after the first run but fell on his second run and finished back in the pack.
Colby-Sawyer had a good day and finished first in both team standings. In the men's race, UMass Amherst was second, followed by Plymouth State, Boston College, Babson College, Saint Anselm College, the University of Connecticut, MIT and Brown University. In the women's race, Boston College was second, followed by UMass, Smith College, Saint Anselm, PSU, Brown, Babson, UConn and MIT.
The teams will compete again Saturday with another giant slalom race at Sunapee.
