LINCOLN, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's alpine ski team recorded its first giant slalom victory of the season Saturday, winning the event among nine teams at the MIT Winter Carnival at Loon Mountain.
The Panthers maintain a hold of the top spot in the MacConnell Division of the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference. The PSU women finished third among 10 schools in Saturday's GS, and moved into second place in the MacConnell Division's women's standings.
PSU had two skiers finish in the top six among the 70 men's racers -- sophomore Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) in second and senior Brad Dietch (New City, N.Y.) in sixth. Ostroski has remarkably placed in the top six in all 17 regular season races in his career, including all seven this winter. Dietch posted the top finish of his career, topping the 10th place he made three weeks ago.
Three other Panther men finished in the top 20 to secure the team win. Sophomore Joseph Healey (Fitchburg, Mass.) recorded his best career finish in 12th place, while sophomore Tyler Bailey (West Hurley, N.Y.) was 18th and sophomore Willie Colt (Hanover, N.H.) tied for 19th.
Freshman Kait Pawlak (North Windham, Vt.) and sophomore Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) were PSU's top finishers in the women's race, placing fifth and sixth among the 71 racers. Pawlak has finished in the top five in five of her six races this season, while Fletcher recorded her best finish of the season and third straight top 10 performance. Junior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) helped the team with a 13th place for PSU.
PSU edged runner-up Colby-Sawyer College to win the team title, with Babson, UMass and Boston College rounding out the top five. Colby-Sawyer won the women's race, with Brown University second, PSU third, UMass fourth and BC fifth.
The ski racing continues Sunday at Pat's Peak with slalom races.
