HENNIKER, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's and women's alpine ski teams both finished in second place behind Colby-Sawyer College Sunday in a slalom event at the University of Massachusetts Winter Carnival at Pat's Peak Ski Area.
The Panther men were runner-up among nine schools in the race; PSU has placed in the top two in seven of eight races this year and lead the MacConnell Division season standings. The Panther women were second among 10 schools on Sunday and maintained their spot at No. 2 in the women's season standings.
PSU had two of the top four finishers among the 71 skiers in the women's race, with freshman Kait Pawlak (North Windham, Vt.) taking third place and junior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) fourth. Pawlak has placed in the top five in six of her seven races this season, and Deane has been in the top five in five of eight races. Sophomore Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) turned in a 14th place to give PSU three in the top 15.
Sophomore Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) continued his outstanding season and career, placing fourth among the 69 men's racers. He has been remarkably consistent, finishing in the top six in all eight races this season, all 18 regular season races in his career, and 21 of 22 overall, including regional and national championships.
Ostroski was one of five Panther racers, all sophomores, to finish in the top 15 in the men's race -- Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in ninth, Willie Colt (Hanover, N.H.) in 11th, Tyler Bailey (West Hurley, N.Y.) in 12th, and Austin Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in 14th.
The final regular season races in the MacConnell Division circuit will be next weekend, Feb. 6-7, at Wildcat Mountain in Pinkham Notch, N.H. The top five teams in the division after next weekend's races will advance to the Eastern Regional championships on Feb. 21-22 at Waterville Valley.
