PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's alpine ski team finished runner-up and the Panther men took third Friday in a giant slalom event at the Boston College/Brown University Winter Carnival at Wildcat Mountain.
The Panther women placed second out of 10 schools, while the PSU men took third among nine teams. Both Plymouth State teams are now in second place overall in the MacConnell Division season standings with one race remaining.
PSU had three skiers finish in the top 10 in the women's race, which included 72 competitors. Junior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) and freshman Kait Pawlak (North Windham, Vt.) were the top Panther finishers in seventh and eighth place, respectively, and sophomore Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) was 10th.
It was another strong day for sophomore Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett), who was the top Panther finisher in the men's race. He captured fifth place among the 68 racers, continuing his streak of finishing in the top six in all nine races this season, all 19 regular season races in his career, and 22 of 23 overall, including regional and national championships.
Three other PSU men were top 15 performers - senior Brad Deitch (New City, N.Y.) in 10th, sophomore Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) in 13th, and sophomore Willie Colt (Hanover, N.H.) in 15th.
The regular season concludes Saturday with a slalom race at Wildcat Mountain. The top five teams in the MacConnell Division after Saturday's races will advance to the Eastern Regional championships on Feb. 21-22 at Waterville Valley.
