PSU Womens Ski Team takes seventh in slalom at Nationals
WINTER PARK, Colo. - Freshman Kait Pawlak (North Windham, Vt.) and junior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyo.) both received Second Team All-American honors for Plymouth State University Friday afternoon with top 20 finishes in the slalom event at the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association's National Championships, held at Winter Park Resort.
The two Panther skiers helped the team to a seventh place finish among the 20 schools in the women's slalom team standings. PSU was the fourth-place team in Wednesday's giant slalom.
Pawlak (near right) finished in a tie for 13th place in Friday's slalom in the combined time of two runs for the 107 racers, while Deane (far right) crossed the finish line in 17th place. Deane was also First Team All-America in Wednesday's giant slalom with a fourth place, and Pawlak was a Second Team honoree with a 10th place in the GS.
Junior Alex Albrecht (Canterbury, N.H./Carrabasset Valley Academy) was PSU's third finisher in the slalom, coming in 35th place. Senior Katie Van Riper (Temple, Maine) placed 43rd, and sophomore Erin Fletcher (Franconia, N.H.) was 47th after the first run but stumbled in the afternoon run and did not finish.
Westminster College captured the team title, edging Sierra Nevada College in the caombined time of the teams' top three racers. Colby-Sawyer College finished in third place, with Western State College (Colo.) fourth, and two other PSU regular season rivals, Boston College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, fifth and sixth, just ahead of the Panthers.
The championships conclude on Saturday with the men's slalom.
