PSU Ski teams wrap up MacConnell Division crowns
JACKSON, N.H. - The Plymouth State University ski teams wrapped up the MacConnell Division regular season championships Sunday with strong performances in a giant slalom race at the Boston College/Brown University Carnival held at Wildcat Mountain.
The Panther men took first place out of 10 schools for the seventh straight race and eighth time in 10 events this winter, and easily finished in first place in the MacConnell Division standings. The Panther women finished in second place out of 10 schools in Saturday's GS, which was good enough to clinch first place in the MacConnell Division women's standings. The PSU women captured only one of the 10 races this year, but won the regular season title with seven runner-up finishes and one third-place.
The regular season crowns qualify the Panther squads for the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference Regional Championships on Feb. 20-21 at Waterville Valley, N.H.
Plymouth State had five men finish in the top 10 in Saturday's GS, which included 73 racers. Freshman Chris Beadon (Ridgefield, Conn.) was the top Panther finisher, taking second place and finishing in the top six for the seventh time in 10 races this season. Junior Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H.) finished in the top eight for an amazing 27th consecutive race with a sixth-place finish and classmate Willie Colt (Hanover, N.H.) was seventh for his third straight top-eight finish. Juniors Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H./John Stark) and Austin Nevins (Henniker, N.H./John Stark) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Ostroski, who captured the individual regular season title last year, finished runner-up this season, getting narrowly edged out by Colby-Sawyer's Shawn Dunstan, who won three races this winter. Beadon and Travis Nevins were tied for fifth in the standings, and freshman Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.) also made the top 10 with a ninth-place.
Freshman Martina Ryberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and senior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyoming) were the top Panther finishers in Saturday's women's race, placing third and fourth, respectively, out of a field of 67 skiers. Both Panther skiers finished in the top 10 in eight of 10 races this season, and Deane finished third and Ryberg fourth in the MacConnell Division regular season standings.
Two other Panthers posted top 20 finishes on Saturday. Sophomore Kait Pawlak (No. Windham, Vt.) finished 15th in the GS and ended up 13th in the regular season standings (despite missing the first four races of the year). Sophomore Katherine Goller (Williston, Vt.) placed 16th Saturday and finished 30th for the season.
