PSU Men’s Ski team continues perfect season at Gunstock

Beadon leads Panthers in GS race; Women slip to fifth

GILFORD, N.H. – The perfect season continued for the Plymouth State University men’s ski team Friday as the Panthers captured first place among the nine schools on the MacConnell Division circuit in a giant slalom race at Gunstock Mountain.

The Panther men had three of the top six finishers among the 71 racers on the course.  Two more in the top 20 gave PSU the team victory for all seven races this season, including four GS and three slaloms.  The Panthers came from behind with several strong runs in the afternoon, defeating runner-up Colby-Sawyer College and third-place Boston College.  The team scoring included just the top three skiers on each team rather than the usual top five.

The PSU’s women’s team did not fare as well, and finished fifth out of 10 teams in the standings.  The Panthers had three finishers in the top 23 among the 77 women’s racers, but PSU’s top two skiers both stumbled and either did not finish or finished out of contention. Boston College won the race, with Colby-Sawyer and UMass Amherst second and third, respectively.  PSU maintained its spot in second place in the women’s season standings despite the fifth place on Friday.

The top trio on the PSU men’s squad, sophomore Chris Beadon (Ridgefield, Conn.), senior Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett) and sophomore Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.), all finished in the top six for the day, with Beadon in second, Ostroski fourth and Spear sixth.  Spear had the fastest time on the course for the second run.  Beadon has collected four runner-up finishes this season, and Ostroski has finished in the top eight in all 36 regular season races in his career.

Senior Austin Nevins (Henniker, N.H.) had a solid day for PSU with a 14th place, and senior Tyler Bailey (West Hurley, N.Y.) led the next group of Panther finishers with a 20th place.

Junior Kait Pawlak (North Windham, Vt.) was the fastest Panther skier in the women’s race, finishing 11th, while junior Katherine Goller (Williston, Vt.) was next to place for PSU in 19th.  Freshman Leigh Anne Connors (Lake Placid, N.Y.) came in 23rd to round out the Panther scorers.

The teams will return to the slopes on Saturday with a slalom race at Blackwater Ski Area in Andover, N.H.
