PSU Skiers compete in slalom at Bates Carnival
Freshmen Beck, Van Ingen pace Panther men
NEWRY, Maine – The Plymouth State University ski teams finished near the bottom of the pack in the slalom race Saturday at the Bates College Carnival at Sunday River Resort.
The University of Vermont won the men's race, ahead of runner-up Middlebury College and third-place University of New Hampshire, while Williams College captured the women's race, with Colby College second and Harvard University third.
Freshmen Andrew Beck and Pieter Van Ingen were the top finishers for the Panther men. Beck was seeded 76th in the race (based on the official FIS international ranking system) and placed 45th in the first run and 31st in the second run to place 30th overall. Van Ingen came in 40th on the first run and 38th on the second run to wind up 36th overall.
Two other Panther men finished in the top 60 among the 87 racers, earning a second run; Senior Tom Sampson was seeded 86th and placed 58th in the first run and 46th in the second to place 48th overall, and junior Chris Beadon was 21st in the initial start and 49th on run two to finish 50th.
Sophomore Molly Shannon was the only one of the Panther women to finish the first run, coming in 59th, but did not complete her second run.
The Panther teams will be back on the slopes next weekend , racing at the UNH Carnival at Attitash.
