Beadon tops Panther men; Whatley leads PSU women
NEWRY, Maine – The Plymouth State University men's ski team posted a seventh-place finish Friday in the giant slalom races at the Bates College Carnival at Sunday River Resort, while the Panther women's squad tied for 13th.
Senior Chris Beadon (Ridgefield, Conn.) was the fastest PSU skier on the hill for the ninth time in 11 races this season. Beadon placed 20th among the 85 men's competitors for his sixth top-20 finish of the season. Senior Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y.) was the next Panther finisher, placing 33rd, while freshman Max Martin (Salt Lake City, Utah) crossed the line in 40th place.
The University of Vermont took the men's team scoring with 117 points, narrowly edging runner-up Middlebury (115) with the University of New Hampshire (105) third. PSU was seventh with 54 points, behind sixth-place Saint Michael's College (69) and ahead of eighth-place Boston College (44).
Freshman Eliza Whatley (Carrabasset, Maine) was the top finisher for the Panther women, taking 47th place among the 80 women's racers. The next three PSU racers were bunched together, with junior Leigh Ann Connors (Lake Placid, N.Y.) in 53rd, junior Catherine Masson (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) in 54th, and freshman Katie Burton (Jackson, N.H.) in 57th.
Dartmouth College captured the women's team title with 104 points, with runner-up Dartmouth (94) edging third-place UVM (92.5). PSU was tied with Brown University with six points.
The teams will be back on the mountain Saturday for the slalom portion of the Bates Carnival, with the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) final rankings and NCAA Championships qualifiers announced at the conclusion of the race.
