Martin leads Panther men; Lemgart strong for Panther women
CARRABASSET VALLEY, Maine – Sophomore Max Martin (Salt Lake City, Utah) and freshman Charlotte Lemgart (Vaerloese, Denmark) turned in strong performances for the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams Friday as the Panthers competed in a giant slalom race at the Colby College Carnival at Sugarloaf Resort.
Martin posted the top finish for PSU with a ninth place among 81 racers in the men's scoring. Martin was the seventh collegiate finisher, which combined with his sixth place in the college standings a week ago, earns him a spot in this year's NCAA Championships. Martin was in 10th place after the first run and moved up to ninth with the 13th-best time on the second attempt. Junior Andrew Beck (Lake George, N.Y.) also registered a strong finish with a 32nd place overall, jumping up from 43rd after his first run.
Lemgart was the lone Panther woman to cross the finish line in both runs and wound up with a solid 19th-place among 82 racers. She was in 34th place after the first run before jumping up 15 places with her second run.
The University of Vermont captured the men's team title ahead of runner-up Dartmouth College, while host Colby College claimed the women's standings over runner-up UVM. The Panther men finished seventh among the 13 team while the Panther women wound up 13th.
The teams will be back on the mountain Saturday at Sugarloaf for the slalom portion of the Colby Carnival.
