Einarsdottir leads Panther women; Martin tops Panther men
NEWRY, Maine – Freshman Freydis Halla Einarsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland) and senior Max Martin (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted the top finishes for the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams Friday as the Panthers opened the 2016 racing season in a giant slalom race at the Bates Winter Carnival at Sunday River.
Einarsdottir placed 16th out of 72 skiers in the women's race, while Martin finished 24th out of 77 on the men's side. Einarsdottir was the eighth-fastest racer on the second run after finishing 24th on the first run, while Martin was 24th on his first attempt and 25th on the second run.
Junior Charlotte Lemgart (Vaerloese, Denmark) was the second PSU women's finisher, crossing the line in 36th place, while sophomore Danny Blake (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was PSU's second finisher in the men's race, posting a 50th place.
Dartmouth College claimed the women's team title with 141 points, ahead of runner-up University of New Hampshire (102) and third-place Colby College (109). PSU was eighth with 47 points, ahead of ninth-place Saint Michael's College (45) and behind seventh-place Williams College (57).
The University of Vermont (133) outscored Dartmouth (111) for the men's crown, with Middlebury College (107) third. PSU finished ninth with 37 points, ahead of 10th-place Williams College (34) and behind eighth-place Bates College (43).
The Bates Carnival concludes Saturday with the slalom races.
