Kuus earns third place finish; Einarsdottir takes sixth
JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. – Sophomore Karl Kuus (Toronto, Ont.) took third and junior Freydis Einarsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland) finished sixth to lead the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams in the slalom at the St. Michael's College Carnival at Smugglers' Notch Resort on Saturday.
Kuus put together a pair of impressive runs to take third. He sat in fourth after an opening run time of 47.90, then posted the third fastest second run (49.94) to move up one place. His combined 1:37.84 was just 1.42 seconds off the pace of winner Tanguy Nef of Dartmouth College.
Sophomore Logan Martin (Edwards, Colo.) and freshman Cooper Yates (Richmond, B.C.) both put together good races for PSU to place 20th and 26th, while freshman Yuri McClure (Hailey, Idaho) also had an excellent day taking 32nd in the field of 70 racers. Martin put together runs of 51.05 and 51.83, while Yates started strong with a first run of 49.73 but slid off the pace with a 55.04 second run. McClure was consistent, with times of 54.10 and 54.01.
On the women's side, Einarsdottir sat in fifth following her first run of 44.96. She was even faster in the second run, posting a time of 44.77 for a combined 1:29.73. Freshman Gabriella Quimby (Dunstable, Mass.) was the Panthers' other scorer, finishing 41st among a field of 54 racers with a combined time of 1:38.61.

Dartmouth and the University of Vermont took the top two spots in both team standings. The Big Green posted 130 points, with UVM tallying 113 on the men's side. PSU was fourth with 86 points, also trailing St. Michael's College (94).
Dartmouth totaled 132 points on the women's side, with the Catamounts totaling 118. PSU earned 49 points to finish in eighth.
Both teams will be back for another round of slalom competition tomorrow to make-up the canceled slalom races originally scheduled for Jan. 20 as part of the Colby College Carnival. Those races were postponed due to high winds.
