PSU Skiing wraps up UVM Carnival with Slalom races

Kuus leads all Panthers with top-10 finish

STOWE, Vt. – Sophomore Karl Kuus (Toronto, Ont.) rebounded after a tough day on the hill Friday with an impressive eighth place finish out of 60 racers on the men's side during the slalom race at the UVM Carnival held at Stowe Mountain Resort on Saturday.

Kuus laid down a good first run with a time of 55.34, and followed that up with a second run that was more than two seconds faster (53.07) finishing with a total time of 1:49.41 to secure the top-10 finish.

Senior Hunter Stuerke (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) cracked the top 30 with a time of 1:56.24. It was a slow first run (1:00.41) for Stuerke, who bounced back with a solid second run of 55.83.

On the women's side, it was the first time this season that the Panthers failed to post a time over both runs. Sophomore Allison Price (Rutland, Vt.) set a good time on her first run (55.03) but did not finish (DNF) her second run. Skiing at her home mountain, senior Courtney Hayden (Stowe, Vt.) was slightly slower than Price on her first run (56.96) but was disqualified on her second run after finishing with a time of 1:17.59.

The University of Vermont (123 points) made it a clean sweep of the weekend on the men's side. After winning the giant slalom race on Friday the Catamounts took the slalom by a narrow margin over Dartmouth College (116). The University of New Hampshire (85) rounded out the top three.

On the women's side the Big Green swept the alpine events, finishing with 126 points in the win. UVM (118) finished in second, and UNH (95) rounded out the top three.

The PSU men placed eighth out of 13 with 59 points, just two points behind both Williams College and Bates College who tied for sixth. The women finished without a point for the first time this season.

Plymouth State returns to action next weekend at the Dartmouth College Carnival at the Dartmouth Skiway. The giant slalom events will take place Friday (Feb. 9) morning, with the slalom scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 10).
