PSU Skiers post impressive finishes at Canadian Nationals

Kuus, Yates shine at RED Mountain Resort

            ROSSLAND, B.C. – Plymouth State University sophomore Karl Kuus (Toronto, Ont.) and freshman Cooper Yates (Richmond, B.C.) put together a pair of impressive performances at the 2018 Canadian National Alpine Skiing Championships hosted by RED Mountain Resort over the weekend.

            Kuus posted a pair of top-ten finishes over the two days, taking sixth place in Saturday's slalom race and ninth in Sunday's giant slalom. Yates wasn't far behind, finishing tied for 14th in the slalom and 23rd in the giant slalom.

            In Saturday's slalom race, Kuus sat in 14th place after his first run of 54.34, but his second run was the fourth fastest (55.97) to move him into sixth. His combined time of 1:50.31 was just 0.04 seconds behind the fifth place finisher. Yates also had a strong second run. His initial run of 55.92 seconds left him in 22nd, but his second run time of 57.43 was the 15th fastest, catapulting him into a tie for 14th with a combined time of 1:53.35.

            Both racers followed a similar pattern during Sunday's giant slalom event. Kuus' first run of 1:01.16 was the 18th fastest, while Yates sat in 26th with a time of 1:02.15. Kuus posted the fifth fastest second run with a time of 1:03.38 to move all the way to ninth with a combined 2:04.54, just 0.03 behind the eighth place finisher. Yates' second run of 1:04.45 was the 18th fastest to move him into 23rd with a combined 2:06.60.

            The slalom field consisted of 95 racers, while the GS field included 94.
