PSU Ski Teams open New England Regionals with GS

Kuus takes eighth; Watson with top-15 finish

            NEWRY, Maine – Junior Karl Kuus (Toronto, Ont.) and freshman Hunter Watson (Ottawa, Ont.) posted another pair of impressive performances to lead the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams in the giant slalom to open the NCAA New England Regionals hosted by Bates College at Sunday River on Friday.

            On the final weekend of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival season, Kuus was the top PSU finisher for the sixth straight race, and seventh time in the last eight events, finishing eighth overall. Watson added a 14th place finish.

            Senior Freydis Einarsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland), fresh off a 35th place finish in the slalom at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre, Sweden last weekend, was the top female finisher after placing 26th.

 

            The Basics:

            New England Regionals / Bates Carnival (Men's GS) – 5th of 13 Teams

            New England Regionals / Bates Carnival (Women's GS) – 12th of 13 Teams

 

            Team Champions (Men):

            * Dartmouth captured the men's team title with 133 points, with the University of Vermont and St. Michael's College finishing deadlocked in second (98).

            * The Panthers finished firmly in fifth with 79 points.

 

            Team Champions (Women):

            * It was UVM earning the women's title after also scoring 133 points. Dartmouth finished second (118), with the University of New Hampshire (98) rounding out the top three.

            * PSU accumulated 20 points to finish just behind Harvard University and Boston College in 12th.

 

            How it Happened (Men):

            * Kuus sat in 11th after his initial run of 1:19.18, but earned a top-ten finish for the second straight weekend after moving up to eighth with a combined 2:37.29.

            * Watson was back in 30th after his opening run, but his 1:17.23 second run was the fourth fastest of the day to jump all the way up to 14th with a total of 2:38.06.

            * Sophomore Cooper Yates (Richmond, B.C.), junior Logan Martin (Edwards, Colo.) and freshman Trevor Maxwell (West Linn, Ore.) were all separated by just over one second. Yates finished 32nd overall with a 2:41.85, Martin ended up 34th (2:42.38) and Maxwell cleared the course in 2:42.89 to finish 36th.

 

            How it Happened (Women):

            * Einarsdottir was the lone woman to post two clean runs. She opened with a 1:23.66 and posted a 1:23.15 in her second run for a combined 2:46.81 to finish 26th.

            * Sophomore Gigi Quimby (Dunstable, Mass.) was in 66th after her first run of 1:28.93, and junior Rachel Kosik (Goodrich, Mich.) held 73rd with an initial run of 1:30.94, but neither were able to finish a second run.

            * Freshman Rachel Smith (Stowe, Vt.) also competed for the Panthers.

 

            Up Next:

            * PSU is back on the slopes on Saturday (Feb. 23) to wrap up the EISA season with the slalom.
