Sophomore Jessica Shapiro (Windsor Locks, CT) scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Plymouth State College, 64-48, in the Little East Conference Tournament semifinals at Feldman Arena.
The third-seeded Colonials, now 20-5, led by eight points at the half, but went on a 17-9 run to open the second half and extend its lead to 16 at 45-29 with 11 minutes to play. Sixth-seeded PSC was never closer than 15 points the rest of the way, and ends its season at 11-13 under coach Marti Kingsley.
WCSU was led by Linda Zapor with 15 points and Amy Matthews with 12. In addition to Shapiro, PSC got eight points apiece from Becky Morse (Sterling, MA) and Jackie Blanchard (Plymouth, MA).
The Colonials advance to the LEC semi-finals Friday at Gorham, ME.
