PSC Women's Hoop defends MIT Tourney Title
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Plymouth State College would like to compete in the MIT Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic every season.
The Panthers, who captured the tournament in 1997, the last time it was held, successfully defended their title over the weekend with season-opening victories over Fitchburg State and Eastern Nazarene. PSC routed Fitchburg State 95-46 in Friday's opener, and held on for a 79-71 victory in Saturday's championship game.
Senior guard Lynn Hersey (Dexter, Maine) and junior forward Krystyna Zagorski (Matawan, NJ) led the Panthers, and were PSC's representatives on the All-Tournament Team. Hersey led a group of seven Panthers who scored in double figures Friday, netting a team-high 15 points along with six rebounds, six assists and two steals. She came back with eight points Saturday, nailing a clutch basket and two free throws down the stretch to clinch the win. Zagorski averaged nine points and 10 rebounds in the tourney, with 10 points and 11 rebounds against Fitchburg and eight points and nine boards vs. Eastern Nazarene.
PSC also got double-figure scoring averages from senior guard Courtney Jacques (Belmont, NH), junior guard/forward Kate Fillion (Littleton, NH), and freshman Courtney Albert (Hudson, NH). Jacques connected on 10.5 points and 4.5 assists, Fillion added 10.5 points, including five three-point field goals, and Albert scored 10.5 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
PSC, 2-0 under second-year head coach Lauren Lavigne, plays its home opener at Foley Gymnasium this Tuesday (Nov. 23) against Notre Dame College (5:30 p.m.).
