HARTFORD, Conn. - The second-best women's basketball season in Plymouth State College history came to a close Saturday afternoon when the Panthers were defeated by Middlebury College, xx-xx, in the semifinals of the ECAC New England Tournament, hosted by Trinity College.
Third-seeded Plymouth State, which captured its first post-season victory in the program's history Wednesday night with a win over Springfield, completes the year at 20-9 under head coach Lauren Lavigne. The only season more successful in PSC's record book was the 1994-95 campaign, when the Panthers went to the Division III NCAA Tournament and finished 21-7.
Second-seeded Middlebury, 18-6, advances to the ECAC New England championship game Sunday at 4 p.m. against top-seeded Trinity College, 21-5. The Bantams knocked off fourth-seeded Colby in the other semi-final, 69-46.
PSC got another outstanding performance from freshman center Courtney Albert (Hudson, NH). The Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, who finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds in Wednesday's win over Springfield, came back with a 20-point, 8-rebound effort against Middlebury, canning 9-of-15 field goal attempts. Junior Kate Fillion (Littleton, NH) was the only other Panther to score in double figures for the second straight game, coming off the bench to score 13 points, including three 3-point field goals.
Freshman Kristin Hanley (Seattle, Wash.) and seniors Dawn Trowbridge (Colbert, Wash.) and Heather Langlois (Havehill, Mass.) combined for 71 of Middlebury's 85 points. Hanley scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Trowbridge scored 25 and collected eight boards, and Langlois contributed 17 points and nine assists.
PSC trailed 54-37 at halftime, and was unable to pull off a comeback in the second half. Middlebury made 12 of 16 free throws for the game, while PSC converted just three of five.
This was only PSC's third post-season appearance in the school's history. The 1990-91 squad went to the ECAC Tournament, and the 1994-95 unit participated in the NCAA Tournament.
